(Do We Really Need to Turn off Channel ZERO?)
Hello DV Team,I hope you all had a productive and eventful weekend. This week in John's Words of Wisdom I would like for you all to do some research on the "Turn off Channel Zero documentary". I met Professor Grif from one of the best Hip-hop groups of all time, Public Enemy a year or so ago at the Afrocentric Bookstore and Betty Shabazz International Charter School here in Chicago. During the event, Professor Grif brought to my attention that he would be assisting with gathering information for this documentary.
Film Details:“Turn Off Channel Zero,” a new film by Opio Media, attempts to broaden that image and get everyday black folks interested in the ways they’re represented in television, film and popular music. The documentary features commentary from Professor Griff of legendary hip hop group Public Enemy, alongside media personalities including the Last Poet’s Abiodun Oyewole, journalist Davey D, radio programmer Paul Porter and Dr. Ray Winbush, Director of the Institute for Urban Research. -otherside-media.com
I have video footage of my first meeting with Grif that I might show during program this week to help give us all a better understanding of the documentary. I would like for all of you to form your own opinions about the "Turn off Channel Zero" documentary in the mean time.

I think we all should leave the pass in the pass. because at the end of the day we had overcome every obstacle in life even our ancestor

I think that the video was great. I think that the video was a great idea to let children know where they get their negative image from instead of a postive image. To me we do get every thing thatw e do from the rappers and artist because the words that they have in their music make use want to try new things like killing, selling drugs, and etc.

hey this is shayla and i think its interesting to see and hear these things but when you showed that vid. i didnt like it at all, the camera must have been shakey or somthingbecause i couldnt get a real clear shot of any thing and the sound was terrible and the questioning wasn't consistint and the sound/audio was terrible....i love movies and things like that but this one i wouldnt recomend this movie to any living person alive.....i can understand if you think im mean but for grown adults...the movie just......didnt come alive.

well I think what he is trying to express to us is that as african americans we are protrayed the wrong way on tv and i guess he is trying to make a change in that and i think it was a very good informal video

Watching the video clip of how hip hop influences and how others think it has some people brain wash from what they watch and listen to on tv or radio but in a way i diagree and agree because music can have an negative and positve affect on all people because not all people get influenced by hat they hear or watch but other may be get infuenced by the negativty that artist put out in there music.
Wow! I just want to show you guys how this goes...I think the younger folks have been called out! And where is your response. Brainwashed! The film was a good start! I found it interesting that many of the teens who watched on Stat Tuesday could not stop talking. Sometimes you are so caught up in the usual media portrayal of African youth that I wonder where the stereotype ends and the real young person begins! The film was calling for YOU to get involved in your own lives! Did anyone get that?
I think the video was very, very boring but it was interesting. Really i don't think we're brain washed, well I'm not brain washed. you asked us who won I love money (I don't know). you said we'd rather watch I love money and other trashy shows rather than something positive. In my opinion that wasn't the case because i don't watch I love money because i know the show is trash and it's a stupid. I admit i did watch I love New York only because i thought it was the most ridiculous show idea ever. I knew the show would be funny so i watched it for my own entertainment. i wasn't interested in the video because i couldn't really hear it but i did catch some parts of it. The video was basically describing how black people portray themselves in Media, Negatively. They were saying how "we" (black people) put out negative thing and give us(black people) and image to the world that puts us in the stereotype that all black people are ignorant, violent, etc. also how they don't show the good we do, rather than giving us a bad name. Honestly i can't blame the people who stereotype us because look at how most of us act.
